Jingmai Mountain Ancient Tree Ripe Pu'er | Ruby-Red, Honeyed, and Woody Elegance

2022 Jingmai Mountain Gushu Ripe Puerh — Dark Roast

Taste of a Dark Roast, very reliable daily Puerh Tea. Born in the UNESCO World Heritage forests of Jingmai Mountain, this ancient-tree ripe Pu'er is, to me, the tea you can always come home to. When brewed daily, its tea-chi settles the body like a warm hand on the shoulder like a dark roast with an earthy body.

The Blessing of the Tea Ancestors

Jingmai Mountain holds the largest and oldest ancient tea forest in the world, a living museum of tea trees that has never known a straight row or a monoculture field. The Blang and Dai peoples who tend this land trace their reverence for tea back to their ancestor Pa Ai Leng, whose parting words remain a living creed here: gold and silver are eventually spent, cattle eventually die, but a tea garden passed down endures and feeds generations. Every spring, villagers still climb to the mountain shrine to give thanks to the tea ancestors — a devotion that has kept these forests untouched for a thousand years.

The tea liquor glows a ruby red — silky, full-bodied, and impeccably pure — with a long, rising finish of sugarcane sweetness and soft floral undertones. Grown in biodiverse, naturally interwoven forests, the old trees draw nourishment from deep humus-rich soil, giving the tea its signature clarity, sweetness, and refined character. Crafted through traditional fermentation, each leaf is shaped by time itself, revealing the unmistakable dignity of Jingmai.

If your day needs an anchor, if you want a cup that is warm rather than sharp, familiar rather than fussy — this is for you. This is the ripe Pu'er I reach for on ordinary days, when I want something honest and unwavering.

Benefits
  • Steady, grounding warmth — a gentle, sustained comfort that settles the body without any of the jitteriness of coffee.
  • Easy on the stomach — traditional fermentation mellows the leaf, making this a gentle, warming tea suited to daily, all-day drinking.
  • Rich in natural sweetness and depth — ancient-tree material and patient fermentation build a rounded, sediment-free liquor with real complexity.
Brewing Guide

Basic Parameters

Leaf amount: ~3g tea per Standard tea cup for up to 5 steeps; 3g to 6g for Gongfu style Water temperature: Ripe Pu'er wants full boiling water — pour it hot, right off the boil, for every steep. Steeping time by style Western style (larger pot, single long steep): 3 minutes for the first steep; re-steep the same leaves 4–6 times, adding 1–2 extra minutes each round Gongfu style (small pot/gaiwan, multiple short infusions): rinse the leaves twice, briefly (5 seconds each, discard the water) — this opens the compressed leaf and clears any fermentation dust; 1st steep: ~6 seconds; 2nd–4th step: 8–12 seconds, increasing gradually; later steps: add 3 seconds each round; good quality ancient-tree ripe Pu'er can comfortably go 5+ infusions this way
Tasting Notes

A warm, orchid-tinged sweetness layered over notes of honey and aged wood, with a cool, forest-floor mustiness in the background that speaks to its wild, old-growth origin.

  • Ancient trees, deep roots — leaves from Jingmai's thousand-year-old trees, nourished by rich forest humus, produce a liquor of unusual clarity and sweetness.
  • A tea shaped by time — traditional wet-piling (wo dui) fermentation, carried out with patience, transforms the leaf into something soft, ruby-red, and free of any raw or musty edge.
  • Consistent, reliable character — this is a tea built for the everyday cup, brewing dependably steep after steep.

Ancient Tea Gardens

The ancient trees grow scattered through old-growth forest — shaded by camphor and duoyi trees, surrounded by wild blossoms and the drone of forest bees — never in rows, never alone. Deep humus-rich soil feeds roots that have been drawing on it for centuries.

The Process — Shaped by Time

Wet-piling (wo dui): the leaf is piled, dampened and turned with patience until it is soft, ruby-red, and free of any raw or musty edge.

Crafted through traditional fermentation, each leaf is shaped by time itself. Dark Roast is a ripe (shou) Pu'er — made the slow, patient way.

Our Impact

For us, a tea that grounds the body should come from equally well-tended land. It's why we source directly from the Blang and Dai families who have cared for these trees for generations, high in the UNESCO-protected forests of Jingmai Mountain, where no pesticides or fertilizers have ever been used. Each leaf is hand-picked and processed by families for whom the tea garden is an inheritance, not a commodity.

The ancient trees grow scattered through old-growth forest — shaded by camphor and duoyi trees, surrounded by wild blossoms and the drone of forest bees — never in rows, never alone. This tangled, living terroir is what gives the tea its "wild mountain character," a quality that can be honored but never replicated elsewhere. Sourced from a single mountain, a single harvest, a single origin — nothing blended in, nothing added.

Jingmai Mountain Ancient Trees — UNESCO World Heritage Forest

Growing among the oldest and largest ancient tea forests on earth, Jingmai Mountain's trees have shared their forest with the Blang and Dai peoples for over a thousand years. Deep humus soil, dense forest canopy, and an unbroken tradition of stewardship give these leaves their signature clarity, honeyed sweetness, and quiet, dignified depth.
